James Sewell Ballet leaps onto the stage with bold new works. Featured is the highly-anticipated choreographies of two guest choreographers and old friends of the company. Shohei Iwahama (former JSB dancer and current member of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo) brings an expansive group work that emanates curiosity, play, and kinship. And Michael Walters returns with his fourth choreographic commission for JSB with a passionate duet, at moments both gritty and gentle. This remarkable evening includes two Sewell works: a new sextet that blends classical and contemporary ballet within Bach's Concerto for Violin & Oboe; and a remount of Doo-Be-Doo, which combines high-energy playful antics with stunning technical feats.

This Is Me

a special engagement with the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus

Image

We perform in a new, special commission titled "Every BODY" featuring multiple composers and choreographers at the magnificent St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church - one of the most highly regarded choral performing venues in the Twin Cities. This is Me, combines choral music and dance to destigmatize topics surrounding body image. This concert is a powerhouse collaboration between the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, See Change Treble Choir, and JSB. Known for their major commissions during GALA festival years, TCGMC also hosts the upcoming quadrennial GALA Choral Festival in July 2024, which will bring 8,000 singers from all over the world into the Twin Cities!

Frankenstein, zombies, and characters of Edgar Allen Poe come to life in this family friendly performance steeped in spooky delight and tragic majesty.

Anchoring the performance is a new choral ballet titled Unfashioned Creature, featuring Twin Cities beloved artists Timothy C. Takach (composer), Penelope Freeh (choreographer), and the MPLS (imPulse) choral ensemble. The work is poetically rooted in Shelley’s Frankenstein, and explores key aspects relating to personhood: otherness, abandonment, despair, and hopeful yearning. Music includes cello, percussion, and the stellar singers of MPLS (imPulse) who will perform a fractured libretto comprised of Shelley’s text.

Also on the program, remounts of two Sewell fall favorites: excerpts from "Takes on Poe" (2012); and "Grave Matters" (2011), which combines undead charm and morbid wit in a playful zombie ballet.
